Snowshoes hiking and Sauna go hand in hand

Snowshoeing up a steep climb

Fjeld (or Fell) is a hill without a peak, instead has a plateau on top. In Scandinavia, the term is used for all the hills that are remnants of the time when the entire region was covered with a glacier. We went on a snowshoes hike on one of these Fells one day, culminating in a campfire and hot chocolate on the top coupled with amazing views!

A hike is a really good idea in such cold weather. It warms you up and gives you a sense of accomplishment when you reach the top and look at the amazing views. We started at sunrise (which was around noon) and it was a 3-4 km roundtrip (taking about 4 hours in total, since hiking in snow wearing 5+ layers of clothesย is exactly as difficult as it sounds ๐Ÿ˜›ย ). From the top of the Fell before coming down we had the most amazing view of watching sun set on the side of the fell and moon rising simultaneously on the other side. And as usual Emilia was a wonderful guide and companion, helping us out and keeping us motivated ๐Ÿ™‚ She made us amazing hot chocolate on the top with gingerbread cookies! My new favourites!

There is a fence in the middle of the climb, which is the start of the reindeer region and thats where all the reindeer live! I never knew that they had designated places and that they were all domesticated! There are no wild reindeer at all! Reindeer herding is one of the most common livelihoods of people and even children start to make their herds and get to know the baby reindeer from the very beginning. Its like a huge extended family! ๐Ÿ™‚

She told us every group she has taken up on this hike, someone has fallen on the way (dont worry, she says, its the snow, no one gets hurt). We were feeling pretty good about ourselves when we reached the top that we had not fallen, when I looked around to find Shilp sprawled on the snow :D. Getting up from the snow wearing the huge snowshoes is not an easy task. It took the two of us to make him upright again. And if you are thinking, I survived the trek just like that, you would be mistaken. I tasted the snow on our hike back down the Fell ๐Ÿ˜›

Manyata and Shilp went up the hill and Shilp came tumbling after :D - This is where he fell on the Fell XD

Oh well! Its just one of those things that you have to do!

When we arrived back to the cottage, we decided to try on the inbuilt Sauna. It wasn’t our first time in a sauna (first time was way back in Helsinki ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). We had heard so much advise on how to use a sauna perfectly and one of the more radical ones that was repeated multiple times by multiple people was, get hot in the sauna and then go jump in the snow and roll around and go right back. Obviously, we couldn’t bring ourselves to do that. So the next best thing was, get hot in the sauna, then stand under the shower and open it in full cold mode. Now that was something that we tried ๐Ÿ˜€ And safe to say, never worked up the courage to do again ๐Ÿ˜›

Shilp and Sauna is probably not the best combination :P
